I didn't know it was this complicated, I will defiantly look into this. Thanks.
If you are planning on getting into this aspect of landscaping, you may have a lot to learn. Trees and shrubs require knowledge of planting, watering, feeding, sun exposure (or not), diseases each different one is subject to and the particular cure for that disease or insect.
Always strive to have more knowledge than you will need in this area of the job because you will quickly learn that by not reacting quickly to some problems, you will loose the shrub or tree. This will not make your customer very happy, obviously.

Most of the information you will need to know will be on the tag of the plant. It isn't all that hard to memorize this information with just sheer repetition of tasks. Where the information becomes very useful is when you are talking with a customer who wants something in particular and you can explain to them why they don't want that tree/shrub.
I would also say you should do a good amount of research on your state(s) of business to find out information about climate and heat and weather patterns. This is great information to have!
I have some tips as well for this post.
Tips for trees:
- Mulch the area around the base of the tree, but keep the mulch away from the trunk.
- Make sure to water the tree right after it has been planted, saturating the soil. Deep watering encourages deeper root growth. You can also bury a small PVC pipe with the tree so that water can more easily access deep roots.
- Trees have the best chance of survival if they are planted with at least a few hours of sunlight, but it's best not to plant in the heat of the day (if possible.)
- Weaker trees or planting trees in windy areas requires staking. Use 3-5 lawn stakes and twine or a cotton string.
- Don't expect your tree to look great for at least a few weeks.
Tips for shrubs:
- Scrap roots from potted shrubs to encourage root growth.
- Deep water shrubs after planting.
- It can be helpful to fertilize with a granulated or liquid fertilizer. This can improve the chances of the plant living.
- Mulch around the shrub to prevent weed growth and keep moisture in the soil around the shrub.
I hope these tips help people out!
