Starting out is hard work, but here is what I did and still do:
For me, I give my customers better service than what they ask for. I do little extra things that make the difference. I always walk the lawn first, pick up any trash, limbs, toys that will slow me down, and I carry the trash, branches, etc with me.
I also try to keep my equipment looking and running top notch, as well as keep me looking good. Colder weather it is decent jeans with a pull over shirt with a collar,(coats as needed) and in the summer I use pull over shirts with collars, and khaki pants . All my shirts have my logo and phone number on the front.
I also use a good softare (Lawn Pro ver 2.15) that makes great invoices,bills, and allows me to send bills via email, which several of my business customers love. To have a great company, you have to look good in all aspects, and do good in all aspects. Keep your over head as low as possible, your service as high as possible, learn from all your mistakes, step out and provide new services, be fair in your estimates, but if your price is higher than local folks, make sure your service is ten times better. I have yet to advertise, and do exceptionally well.
And yes, you will have to put up with comments all the time about your 'menial" job, but, I just smile every time I go to the bank.
Lawn service can work, even where I am in a very rural mountainous county, but with thought, a daily game plan, and willing to do more than just cut grass, it will work, and work more profitable.
