With winter coming the field mice are trying to overrun my mower building does anyone have any tricks to stop them? I have put out traps and they are robbing them without even throwing the trap. I cant use poison because my dogs pen surrounds 3 sides of the building. Any ideas would be appreciated.
For traps use peanut butter. Mice love it and they can't steal it off the trap like they can cheese. I'd recommend buying a cheap store-brand peanut butter and just leave the container in a cabinet in the building. If it becomes spoiled that works even better. They LOVE rancid peanut butter.
They make this cake that when mice eat it they get dehydrated and leave to search for water. If they can't find water they will die, but not because of some poison or something. They probably have it at a local hardware store. If you want I can ask someone I know who uses it for a name.
It sounds stupid but if you put a small saucer of pop, such as Pepsi or Coke, on the floor mice will drink it and the caffeine will cause them to have a heart attack and die. Pop isn't good for dogs either, but a small amount that would fit in a saucer would probably be ok.
An indoor solution is to buy glue traps. I have had great luck with Black Panther or Black Cat glue traps. They sell the at Wal Mart. They have a chemical in the glue that causes the mouse to go numb so it doesn't suffer and try to chew it's legs off, they just fall asleep.
You can always put poison inside the building, like in cabinets and such where the dogs can't get into. Just make sure you get something that dehydrates the blood so they don't smell if they die in a wall or something.
